Silver Spring Native Serves Aboard USS Thomas Hudner

ATLANTIC OCEAN - A 1993 Montgomery Blair High School graduate and 1997 University of Maryland, College Park graduate and native of Silver Spring, Maryland, is serving aboard USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116), a guided-missile destroyer, currently conducting operations in the Atlantic Ocean.

Cmdr. Thanh D. Hoang is a medical officer responsible for providing medical support to the crew.

"I collaborate with other health care providers and ensure the health and safety of our sailors on the ship," Hoang said.

Thomas Hudner is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer homeported in Mayport, Florida, named in honor of U.S. naval aviator Thomas Hudner, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in trying to save the life of his wingman, Ensign Jesse L. Brown, during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in the Korean War. Guided-missile destroyers are multi-mission surface combatants capable of conducting anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-surface warfare.

Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community and career, Hoang's proudest accomplishment is being able to contribute with the health team to provide medical support for various missions.

"I learn and work well with other team members and leaders on naval ships," Hoang said. "I represent our hospital and our U.S. Navy."

Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Hoang, who has military ties with family members who have previously served. Hoang is honored to carry on the family tradition.

“My brother-in-law served in the Army for 20 years and retired, and my nephews, are currently serving in the military," Hoang said.

As a member of the U.S. Navy, Hoang, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.

"I joined the military to learn Navy Medicine and to have the opportunity to serve the community, the Navy and the country," Hoang added. "I would like to do my best for me, for my family and to contribute my small part towards our community and our society."
